Introducing our joint Academy of Medical Sciences Starter Grants for Clinical Lecturers awardee

We are happy to announce that Dr. Maria Krutikov has been awarded a joint Academy of Medical Sciences Starter Grant for Clinical Lecturers.

This scheme is designed to support clinical lecturers with ‘starter funds’ to enable them to establish their independent research portfolio and form the basis of further grant funding applications. Maria joins a cohort of fellows funded through the same scheme, alongside Dr. Claire Broderick (Imperial College London) and Dr. Meher Lad (Newcastle University). You can read more about Claire and Meher’s Vivensa Foundation-funded awards here.

Based at the University of Sussex, Maria will be investigating wastewater in care homes testing for various bacteria and viruses to assess whether there is an association with health outcomes. You can find out more about Maria and her work here.

The assessment process is managed by the Academy of Medical Sciences, with applications undergoing peer and panel review. The average success rate for this scheme is 42% and more information about this can be found in a recent evaluation commissioned by the Academy of Medical Sciences here.

The scheme is open to applications twice a year in January and July, with deadlines in March and September. The next round will open in January 2026.For more information, visit our Apply for funding page.
