Outcome of the Joint Doctoral Training Fellowship with the British Geriatrics Society for 2023/24

The sixth round of the Joint British Geriatrics Society/Vivensa Foundation Doctoral Training Fellowship scheme opened in late 2023. This scheme aims at supporting frontline healthcare professionals interested in pursuing a career in ageing-related research — including doctors, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals. You can read more about the scheme and the six fellows that have been funded so far in our news item.

In October 2024, we awarded a Fellowship to a physiotherapist, however, they had secured an another Fellowship and, as a result, withdrew their application. We extend our congratulations and wish them the best of luck in their continued academic and professional journey.

Overall, we received five applications, of which four were eligible. Following  external peer review, the applications were assessed by a shortlisting and interview Panel, which made the final funding recommendation. Given the outcome, the success rate for eligible applications in this round was 25%. The Panel consisted of:

  • Professor Andrew Clegg (University of Leeds and Vivensa Foundation Research Grants Committee member)
  • Professor Emma Vardy (University of Manchester and BGS representative)
  • Professor Dame Louise Robinson (Newcastle University and Vivensa Foundation Research Grants Committee member)
  • Dr Sarah Hopkins (University of Cambridge and current Joint BGS / Vivensa Foundation Research Training Fellow)

The 2024/25 round of the scheme recently closed to applications, and we hope to announce the outcome of that round in due course. The 2025/26 round of the scheme will open to applications later this year.
