Introducing our 2025 Joint British Geriatrics Society / Vivensa Foundation Doctoral Training Fellow

We are happy to announce that Kirandeep (Kiri) Marsh has been awarded the Joint Doctoral Training Fellowship with the British Geriatrics Society (BGS).

Kiri’s fellowship was awarded under the seventh round of the scheme, aimed at supporting frontline healthcare professionals interested in advancing ageing-related research.

The latest round opened in December 2024. All eligible applications underwent external peer review and were then assessed by the shortlisting / interview panel, chaired by Sarah Mistry, CEO of the BGS. Recommendations from the panel were approved by our Research Grants Committee, and the success rate for this round was 20%. The panel consisted of:

  • Professor Dame Louise Robinson (Newcastle University and Vivensa Foundation Research Grants Committee member)
  • Dr Marc Österdahl (King’s College London and current Joint BGS / Vivensa Foundation Doctoral Training Fellow)
  • Dr Oliver (Oly) Todd (University of Leeds / Bradford Institute for Health Research and clinical academic representative of the BGS)
  • Professor Thomas Jackson (University of Birmingham and Vivensa Foundation Research Grants Committee member)

Following a competitive application process, experienced dietician Kiri was awarded £277,282.27 to pursue a PhD at Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust to investigate a nutritional programme to reduce muscle loss (sarcopenia) in older adults recovering from hip fractures.
